We are planning to make a youth exchange (action 1.1 of Youth in Action Program) in Balikesir, Turkey. The idea of the youth exchange project is that young people from different European countries create a common theatre play. The play would be based upon stereotypes and cultural differences and will take place in Balikesir, Turkey, specifically in the theatre hall of the city. The project team will be composed of 30 youngsters from six countries between the age of 18-25, including the hosting country and group leaders. The planned date of the activity is between 20 September 2010 and 30 September 2010 (excluding travelling days). The target audience of the play will be primary school children. This project aims to offer a clearer insight into different cultures, ways of life and common misperceptions. As result of this, communication obstacles and common stereotypes shall be avoided in the future. It also tries to promote art and culture as successful ways of informal learning. The method to achieve these goals will be a theater performance based on different stories (fables or short stories) with the content to be both pedagogical and enjoyable for the children. These stories shall be the result of the cooperation and working together of the members of the project. The participants will be provided with the basic ideas and main guidelines for the script, but they are expected to contribute with their own ideas and personal experiences. The choice and design of scene and costumes will be also done by the participants of the youth exchange programme. As mentioned above, the participants will be encouraged to take an active part in the decisions of theater play, they are also encouraged to bring their own instruments, traditional costumes and anything they consider might be of use for the performance. As the hosting city has a lack of investment and the local people have a very limited contact with other cultures and nationalities, it is a perfect opportunity to create strong international bonds in Balikesir. At the same time this youth exchange programme provides a better understanding of Turkish culture and daily life for the European participants. Before the realization of the youth exchange, and Advance planning visit will take place. The groups consist of 4 participants + 1 group leader. 70% of travel costs, 100% of accommodation, food, local transport, visa will be covered by Turkish National Agency. 30% of the travel costs will be covered by the participants.
